Online dating is known as the practice of searching for a romantic or sexual partner on the Internet, usually through use of a website. Match.com was the first online dating site established in 1995. As soon as 2002, 26.2 million people were registered. During the early stages of Match, the services were very simple and matched individuals based on the likes and dislikes of an individual’s profile. According to the U.S. News & World Report, nearly 40 million people use or have at least visited online dating websites. Online dating magazine states that there are approximately 2,500 online dating sites in the United States and more than 5,000 online dating services worldwide.
The use of mobile dating apps has helped increase the numbers behind online dating amongst individuals from the ages of 18-24. According to the PewResearchCenter, in 2013 only 5% of individuals from the ages of 18-24 reported to be using mobile dating apps. In 2016, there was a 17% increase as 22% of these young adults reported to be using some for of mobile dating apps. Some of the most popular mobile dating apps include Tinder, Happn, and Bumble. With the advancement in technology, it makes it easier for one to match with someone in your area.
Online dating has been said to be the foundation for long lasting relationships or even marriage. The PewResearch Center reports that 5% of Americans who are currently married or in a long-term partnership met their partner somewhere online. Among those who have been together for ten years or less, 11% met online. Along with these percentages, 120,000 marriages a year are reported to have occurred from the use of online dating.
